SUSTAINABLE: RASTA JOINS "SPORTS FOR FUTURE"!

On the way to the new easyCredit Basketball Bundesliga season, RASTA Vechta is taking sustainability even more seriously. The clubs in the top tier of German basketball have committed to aligning themselves with the United Nations' 'Sustainable Development Goals' (SDGs). The SDGs represent the central and global guidelines for sustainability. To meet this commitment, RASTA is now joining "Sports For Future."

Like their counterparts in the easyCredit BBL, RASTA Vechta is focusing on the fields of "Health and Well-being," "Quality Education," "Reduced Inequalities," "Climate Action," and "Partnerships to Achieve the Goals." "We defined our sustainability goals in line with the easyCredit BBL strategy and taking into account the SDGs some time ago and are gradually working on them. Various actions during game days and, especially, in the social sector will be part of this," says Raphael Dornieden, Managing Director at RASTA, providing an outlook.

The SDG "Climate Action" plays a significant role in "Sports For Future." Additionally, sports activities for children and young people will be linked to learning levels such as "Sustainability," "Democracy," and "Climate Protection." "We are delighted that RASTA Vechta, the first Basketball Bundesliga club, is now joining our 'Sports For Future' initiative. We need sports actors who consider sustainability and are part of the fight against the climate crisis," says Stefan Wagner, 1st Chairman of the registered association.

Initiators of "Sports For Future" include SV Werder Bremen and VfL Osnabrück, with Olympic champion Fabian Hambüchen involved from the beginning. Supporters now include the German hockey national teams, FSV Mainz 05, and the German Football Association. RASTA is now making a statement for basketball. "As a basketball club with not only over 3,000 spectators at every home game but also hundreds of members in the parent club SC RASTA Vechta e.V., we want to support not only the easyCredit BBL strategy but also use our popularity in the Oldenburger Münsterland to address important issues, not only for ourselves but also to raise awareness," says RASTA's Managing Director Lukas Middendorf.

"The Basketball Bundesliga has a strong impact," Stefan Wagner acknowledges. "The fact that the BBL is focusing on sustainability through the first-time development of a sustainability strategy this year and the integration of concrete goals into licensing criteria from 2024 is a positive sign. RASTA Vechta is now embarking on this journey as a club. We look forward to the collaboration and to developing ideas together to further advance the topic."
